Unfortunately, people who suffer with high blood pressure are potentially causing severe long term damage to their blood vessels and organs, which in turns increases their risk of suffering a stroke, heart attack or heart disease or in worse cases kidney failure.
Once a doctor has identified a person has high blood pressure, or they are pre hypertensive (raised blood pressure but not high enough to be considered as having high blood pressure), the doctor will normally suggest certain lifestyle changes, including a change in diet, exercise and changes to certain habits. Also, dependent upon the severity of the symptoms, they may prescribe medication to lower the blood pressure quickly to avoid any potential further damage being caused to the body.
A diet for someone with high blood pressure needs to restrict certain foods, including those that are high in sodium and fat, and bulk up on those foods that have proven health benefits. So, a diet to help reduce high blood pressure would contain a high proportion of fruit and vegetables and fish and lean meats.
Vegetables and fruits have high levels of electrolytes including potassium, magnesium and calcium and studies carried out have shown that people who have diets which are high in potassium tend to have lower blood pressure than those that that do not.
One particular vegetable that contains large amounts of potassium is the potato; also lima beans, zucchini, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower and artichokes. Legumes such as pinto beans, chickpea beans and lentils also contain large levels of potassium.
There is some research that suggests between 8 and 10 servings of fruit and vegetables, as well as 3 servings of low fat dairy products, will help lower a person's high blood pressure. Also just by adding supplements containing potassium, magnesium and calcium a person can also help to lower high blood pressure.
